 4. April 1915 (11. April nach dem damals auch im Osmanischen Reich üblich
 en julianischen Kalender) begann mit der Massenfestnahme von Armeniern in 
 der Hauptstadt Konstantinopel der Genozid an armenischen Bürgern des Osma
 nischen Reiches. Binnen dreier Tage wurden nach bereits früher zusammenge
 stellten Listen Lehrer\, Dichter und Schriftsteller\, Journalisten\, Parla
 mentsabgeordnete sowie politische Aktivisten\, Geistliche\, Unternehmer un
 d andere Angehörige der intellektuellen Elite festgenommen und in das Lan
 desinnere deportiert\, unter dem Vorwand gerichtlicher Untersuchungen. Fas
 t alle starben in den kommenden Monaten an den Foltern während der Verhö
 re oder bei den anschließenden Massakern und Deportationen (Todesmärsche
 n). Nach Schätzung der deutschen Botschaft Konstantinopel sowie des Armen
 isch-Apostolischen Patriarchats zu Konstantinopel starben 1\,5 von 2\,5 Mi
 llionen (1914) Menschen der armenischen Bevölkerung im Osmanischen Reich.
